The Last Time I Cried Your Name novel Chapter 247

He signaled to General, and the dog came running right over, looking up at him with those loyal eyes.

“I’ve been taking care of General since you married Franco. He never let anyone else touch him at the White Estate, so I brought him along. Now that you’re here, he can keep you company.”

Petty felt a wave of warmth settle in her chest. She didn’t tell Jackson her real plan — as soon as Susan’s family came to collect her ashes and her few things, Petty would be leaving Misty Vale.

...

That evening, Laura had just finished her shower. By the time the housekeeper came in, Laura was already wrapped in her bathrobe, fingers moving with practiced ease as she tied the sash in a neat knot.

The housekeeper lifted her and carried her to the edge of the bed, then started drying Laura’s hair. “Laura, I saw the news today. That annoying housekeeper at Misty Vale is dead.”

Laura was distracted, fussing with her nails. “Oh? How did she die?”

“I heard it was awful. Someone smashed her mouth in. Just hearing about it gives me chills.” The housekeeper’s voice trembled.

Laura let out a quiet laugh and took the hairdryer from her. “I’ll finish up myself.”

“I’ll go tidy the bathroom, then.”

The housekeeper turned away and headed back to clean up.

Laura held the hairdryer in one hand, fluffing her hair with the other while the warm air rushed past her ears.

When the housekeeper came out again, she was carrying the laundry basket. She paused, turning over a sock, frowning. “Laura, did you notice this sock... it looks like it has blood on it?”

The hairdryer stopped suddenly. Silence hung thick in the room.

Laura sighed softly and said, without a hint of concern, “Just throw it out.”

Right then, the hum of a car engine drifted in from the courtyard. The Glades was never a place for random visitors.

Laura’s eyes brightened and her face softened with a little hopeful excitement. “Is that Franco?”
