Everyone was wrapped up in the chaos of the fire blazing through the main house. Nobody saw someone quietly sneaking into the car.
Petty twisted the key. Just as she was closing the door, General jumped in, clambered into the passenger seat, and sat up straight, like he belonged there.
The sound of the engine was buried under all the shouting and hissing from the firefighters outside.
Petty gripped the steering wheel tight. The guard post was just ahead. If she could get past, nothing would stop her. But when the guards spotted her through the windshield, they immediately sprang into action, spreading out to block her way.
“General!” Petty yelled as she slowed down and pushed open the car door. In a flash, General leaped out, barking his head off as he charged at the guards.
“Woof! Woof woof!”
With General creating a distraction, Petty floored the gas pedal. The car shot forward, flying past the gate like an arrow.
She glanced in the rearview mirror and saw General still holding off the guards for her. She knew they'd recognize him and wouldn’t hurt him. That thought helped her focus on the road.
The guard post quickly faded into the distance. Just around the bend was the tree-lined avenue leading straight out.
But then she noticed her grip tightening around the wheel.
Across the avenue, five cars were parked side by side, blocking any way out.
Five minutes earlier, Petty hadn’t noticed the pair of dark eyes in the main house window, someone silently watching the car pull away.
When General barked at Franco, he pressed close to his pant leg.
Franco ran his fingers through General's fur. It was still a little damp.
With the fire raging, the warmth in the house had climbed steadily. If General’s fur was wet, but almost dry after coming down from the second floor, someone must have soaked him intentionally before escaping. And if someone had time to do that, but didn't seem to have escaped, there was only one explanation. She’d taken another way out.
Now Petty stared at the men standing in front of the cars blocking her escape. Her heart sank. Franco’s security had taken another route to corner her.
