The Last Time I Cried Your Name novel Chapter 291

Petty had crammed as much as she could on the drive over, scanning notes on her phone the entire way. The assignment had fallen into her lap at the last minute, so she’d barely had time to get her head around it.

By the time the car rolled to a stop, she felt like she knew the basics. She took one last look at her notes before slipping them away and getting out. The moment she stepped onto the pavement, a wave of nausea hit her. She gripped her bag, willing the dizziness to pass.

“Petty, are you alright?” Her coworker’s eyes scanned her pale face with obvious concern.

“I think I got a little carsick,” Petty said. “Just need a second.”

The conference hadn’t started yet, so she found an empty chair off to the side. Her coworker handed her a cup of hot water. After a few sips, the queasy feeling started to fade, and she caught her breath.

Suddenly a formal voice echoed from the main entrance. “Franco, this way, please.”

Petty’s hand froze around her cup. She looked up, and just like that, she saw him. Franco. He was striding into the room, surrounded by people, all eyes on him. The crowd parted around him as he walked, looking completely unbothered in a perfectly tailored black suit, every detail immaculate. His expression was cool and distant.

She hadn’t run into Franco once since the day Parrish made that deal with him. Cabinda was a sprawling city, and if you weren’t living together, the odds of crossing paths were slim, especially by accident. If this assignment hadn’t fallen into her hands, she never would’ve seen him again.

Petty quickly looked away and pulled a mask from her pocket, slipping it on over her face. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Franco glance in her direction, catching the fleeting moment her pale face was visible before she covered it up.

She checked the list of invited guests for the event. Franco’s name wasn’t on it. No idea why he was here. Not my business, she told herself. Just pretend he isn't here.

After that internal pep talk, she followed her coworker to the media section and took her seat. She tried to focus, ignoring the strange tension building at the back of her mind.

Before long, Petty felt a sudden, urgent need to use the restroom. Leaning in, she whispered, “I’m going to the bathroom.”
