The Last Time I Cried Your Name novel Chapter 30

“So, can you help me?” Petty looked at him, hope flickering in her eyes.

Jared frowned, clearly troubled. He hadn’t expected this many people to be after the position. He’d actually heard rumors before the registration even opened, but it never crossed his mind that Petty would want in, so he hadn’t reached out to her ahead of time. Now, with all the spots taken, there really wasn’t much he could do.

“Jared, please. Just this once. I really want to go,” Petty said, her voice gentle but insistent.

A few of the older staff in the department would sometimes call him by his first name, Jared, when they were joking around. Hearing Petty say it directly made his frown deepen.

“You…” he started, but his words faded as he met her steady, determined gaze. He let out a long sigh. “I’m afraid I can’t help. You should talk to Nash. He knows everyone. If he puts in a word for you, I’m sure they’ll make an exception.”

Petty clenched her fingers, nerves getting the better of her.

She had studied international relations in grad school, and Nash had been her advisor. But Nash was also Laura’s uncle. Petty knew that if Nash spoke up, the problem would be solved in no time. Several of his favorite former students already held senior positions at the agency. She used to be one of those star students herself.

Years ago, when she gave up her chance to go abroad, Nash was furious. He thought she was being too sentimental. Ever since, Petty had struggled to face him, and they’d barely seen each other. Thinking about it now, she realized he’d been right.

Petty left the office, scrolled through her contacts, and found Nash’s number. She hesitated for a moment, then pressed call.

The phone rang three times before someone answered.

“Petty?” The voice on the other end caught her off guard. It was Laura.

Petty tightened her grip on her phone. “I was hoping to speak to Nash.”

“Nash isn’t feeling well,” Laura replied softly.
