“You think you’re all that?” Petty bit back another curse, her sarcasm sharp enough to sting. “Going to shut me up? Why not just grab a cannon and blow my mouth right off?”
She wasn’t joking. Franco was crazy enough to do just about anything.
He watched her, lips twitching as he listened to her deliberately dramatic voice. She was trying to distract him, pretending to be clever, but he saw right through all of it.
Wrapped tight in a blanket, hair messily tucked inside, Petty looked defenseless, her bare face pale against the moonlit window. The helicopter sliced through the sky above Cabinda. Cool moonlight spilled across her features, softening everything, giving her a hazy, mysterious glow.
There was something almost hypnotic about the way she looked. She had a sarcastic bite in her voice, eyes slightly upturned at the corners, making her look both fierce and achingly pretty.
Franco watched her lips—still a little pale, slowly returning to their usual color. “What would be the point? Blowing your mouth up sounds boring.” His gaze zeroed in as if he couldn’t look away.
Petty rolled her eyes and turned away, fed up. Before she could settle, Franco caught her chin, gently but firmly, and turned her to face him again. His eyes dropped to her lips, lingering, then drifted to her red and tired eyes.
“Not gonna sleep?”
He just wouldn’t quit. “Sleep your mom!” she shot back, not even thinking before the words left her mouth.
His eyes darkened, unreadable and intense. Suddenly he leaned in, hand still on her jaw, forcing her gaze up to his. He kissed her, hard, catching her lips before she could protest, his tongue slipping past her lips, stealing her breath and whatever insult she still had left.
She tried to fight back, tried to curse him out even as his mouth pinned her in place.
Franco’s grip slid from her jaw to cradle the back of her head. He deepened the kiss, coaxing her tongue until all her sharp words were lost. Petty, out of patience and air, shoved him hard, her legs twisting and kicking at his as she struggled to break free.
