“I want to go back to Cabinda for lunch.”
“We won’t make it in time for lunch now.” Franco sounded completely sure of himself.
Petty finally looked up from her magazine and shot him a glance. He was standing there, shirtless, toweling off his hair, all lean muscle and quiet confidence. Droplets of water traced down from his chest and abs, slipping past the waistband of pants that still clung from his swim. It was honestly hard not to stare, but Petty forced herself to look away.
“If we can get back for dinner, that’s all I care about,” she muttered.
Franco met her eyes, lips barely parting in a teasing smile. “If we go to Cabinda, we won’t make it back for dinner either.”
Petty’s fingers tightened around the magazine, crumpling its edges. “Who says we have to come back here, anyway?”
She saw through him. Too late for lunch, too late for dinner, no way to leave. He was just finding excuses to keep her on this island.
With one last swipe of the towel, Franco slicked his hair back, revealing that strong, classic bone structure, a bold forehead, and a sharp widow’s peak that made him look even more handsome. He walked over and plucked the mangled magazine from her hands. As he leaned forward, his eyes flickered for just a second to the shape of her chest, catching a hint of her perfume.
He folded the magazine in half without a second thought and tossed it aside, then reached out and gently but firmly wrapped his fingers around her wrist, pulling her to her feet.
“There’s an outdoor shooting range on the island. Once we’ve eaten and the rain stops, I’ll take you out to shoot.”
The mention of shooting made Petty’s hand ache again as if remembering its own wound.
She couldn’t forget The Glades, the day he’d shot the pistol right out of her grip. The shock of it still sent chills through her, cold and deep as the sea.
She met his gaze, searching for answers. “Why did you bring me here, Franco? What do you actually want from me?”
He looked into her eyes for a long moment. His face softened, just for a second. Petty fully expected him to dodge the question—he usually did. But this time he answered.
