Jay watched Laura, her face as pale as a ghost, and Susan’s tragic death flashed through his mind.
The moment his words hit her, Laura’s eyes froze. She had done everything she could to keep the truth from Franco. If he ever found out her legs weren’t really injured, what would he think of her? She would stop being his savior. Her last tie to him would be cut. So ever since the accident, she had faked it, pretending for so long that she sometimes forgot she could actually walk. Living like this was humiliating, but she endured it, hoping Franco would feel some guilt, maybe treat her a little better.
And now, these people wanted to ruin all of that.
Suddenly, her eyes turned icy. Without warning, she snatched a switchblade from behind her back. The blade flicked open, and she lunged at Jay, lightning fast.
No one saw it coming, not even the bodyguards nearby. Jay’s reaction was even faster. Right as she attacked, he caught her wrist and twisted, making the knife tumble to the ground.
Laura didn’t give up. Her other fist lashed out, but after just two moves, Jay narrowed his dark eyes, realizing she was more skilled than he’d guessed. But two moves were all he needed. Before Laura could try anything else, the click of handcuffs snapped her back to reality. She fought against them, shouting, “So when you told me Franco found someone better, that was all a lie! You just wanted to push me, didn’t you?”
If not, there’s no way Jay and his people would have been waiting for her here. It was a trap, all along.
She laughed, wild and bitter. “So it was just a trick. That means I’m still the one Franco needs, right?”
Her expression twisted, desperate and cold. “I’m still more important than Petty, aren’t I? Franco will save me for my blood. I matter more than Petty!”
“I’m the one Franco cares for most. Petty can’t compete! She’ll never win!”
Jay listened to her crazed rambling, then looked down at her with cool disgust. “Pathetic. You’re nothing compared to Mrs. White.”
Laura shrieked, her voice sharp with rage. “No… no, you’re wrong! Petty isn’t Mrs. White!”
