The Last Time I Cried Your Name novel Chapter 38

The alarm had barely finished its first ring when she opened her eyes. Without thinking, she reached for her phone on the nightstand, unlocked it, and quickly tapped Franco’s number from memory.

Just like last night, the call rang and rang until it cut off by itself. No answer.

She tried Jay’s number next.

This time, someone picked up.

Petty’s voice was rough, tired. She didn’t bother with small talk. “Let me talk to Franco.”

“Franco’s in an important meeting right now.”

Petty didn’t hesitate. “I need to talk to Franco.”

Her voice was so steady, it was almost scary. Jay frowned on the other end.

Petty sat hunched at the edge of her bed, listening to footsteps echoing through what sounded like an empty hallway. Wind howled in the background.

“What is it?” Franco’s voice came through, cold and clear.

Petty’s eyes burned with fresh tears. She hated him, hated how much he made her hurt.

She tried to steady herself, but her voice still shook. “You want to be with Laura? Fine. I’ll give you what you want. After the divorce, I don’t want anything except the house at The Glades. I want my home.”

At first her voice was slow, almost controlled, but by the end, she was out of breath, her words tumbling out, sharp and raw.

Franco stood half in shadow, slipping off his glasses. He squinted up at the swirling, heavy clouds outside. His shoes pressed into the thin snow on the terrace, making a soft crunch each time he shifted his weight.

He let the silence stretch before letting out a soft, mocking laugh.

“Keep dreaming.”

The call ended with a flat, empty tone.

She tried calling him again. No answer.
