Petty shook her head, her voice steady. “Never.”
There was no way she could ever see Harris as a joke.
Back when she was kidnapped, it was Harris who chased after her across the sea, not caring about his own safety. Even when he got shot, he still fought to protect her.
She remembered everything he’d done.
She could feel his quiet, careful affection, always held in check. But even now, there just weren’t any romantic feelings there for him.
“To me, you’ll always be the big brother who looked out for me.”
Harris felt bitterness swell up inside him. He coughed a few times, and the tired look in his eyes made him seem even more alone.
His mind drifted back, all those years before she’d announced she wanted to marry Franco, all the time he silently watched over her, the three years he faded out of her life after she ‘married.’ He couldn’t even count how many years had passed like that.
He once thought his affection for her wasn’t so deep, that after agreeing to the engagement, he should be able to move on. When he actually tried, though, he realized those feelings were tangled up inside him, impossible to break free from.
He stifled another cough, his face pale, eyes rimmed with red. “How’s it going with your divorce from Franco?”
Petty didn’t want to keep him worrying. She decided to be honest. “I was never actually married to him. We never got a marriage certificate, so you really don’t need to worry about me being stuck.”
Never actually married…
Harris needed a moment to take it in, but soon everything clicked into place.
A sharp ache hit his heart. “If I’d found out sooner, maybe you wouldn’t have gone through all that.”
Petty just shook her head and let out a wry smile. “You don’t know the kind of things he did. They’re not easy to uncover.”
If things had been that simple, she wouldn’t have made so many mistakes, only to end up not married at all.
Thinking about all the pain she’d been through and how powerless he’d been to help, Harris took a deep breath, fighting back his emotions.
“Alright, Harris, just go home. You’ve got a lot to do tomorrow—”
