The Last Time I Cried Your Name novel Chapter 392

The poisoned dart hit the floor with a sharp clatter.

Jay sprang into action. He grabbed the bodyguard’s arm tight, yanked the tie from the guy’s neck, and quickly tied it around his wrist to slow the bleeding. Without even thinking about cleaning the blade, Jay pulled a switchblade from his belt and sliced into the back of the bodyguard’s hand. Blood rushed out, but time wasn’t something they had.

“Get him to the hospital, now.” Jay’s voice was low and commanding as he looked toward the guards at the door.

Once they’d rushed the man out, Jay headed back to the closet. The safe was built into a dark, hidden corner, impossible to see unless you knew exactly where to look.

Even though it was a sizeable safe, there wasn’t much space inside. The five poisoned darts scattered on the floor probably filled the interior almost completely. Didn’t seem like there could be any more nasty surprises.

He tossed a flashlight inside just to be sure. Nothing happened. The beam lit up everything, making the contents unmistakable.

A small box sat quietly inside.

Jay slipped on gloves, reached in, and took out the box. Under the lid, a single pill rested inside. He wrapped it up with a tissue and slid it into his pocket before finally leaving Laura’s room.

Downstairs, Eaton stood up as Jay came down. He hadn’t noticed anything off when Jay’s men had rushed out earlier, so he had no idea anyone had been hurt.

Eaton studied Jay. “Did you get what you needed?”

Jay gave a short nod. “Sorry for disrupting your evening, Eaton.”

Eaton shook his head. “Not at all. I stopped by Laura’s place at The Glades earlier. Looks like she’s not living there now?”

Laura’s bodyguards and the maid were long gone. Jay remembered when he and his team first broke in, they’d found the maid dead outside Laura’s bedroom. Stabbed, her mouth sliced open… brutal work, the kind Jay recognized as Laura’s style.

He knew what Eaton wanted to ask. “The Green family is after her. Franco’s moved her somewhere safe. You don’t need to worry.”

As Jay left, Eaton lingered in the hallway, thoughtful. Then he turned and climbed the stairs to Laura’s room.

Jay had already cleaned up all the evidence—the darts, the blood. There was nothing left to find.
