After rolling an egg over her face that evening, the bruises had almost faded. You could barely see them now. Even the housekeeper was amazed, saying she never would have guessed how Petty had looked when she came home last night.
The evidence was almost gone, so how could he still notice…-
Petty’s chest grew tight and sour.
“I tripped at work yesterday,” she said.
There was really no point in telling him the truth, not anymore.
Still, she didn’t realize her words had come out laced with emotion.
Her tone clearly annoyed Franco. He pressed his thumb a little harder against her lips and let out a soft, mocking laugh. “Aren’t you a little old for that?”
The car door closed. Warm air filled the space, wrapping around Petty and slowly chasing away the cold that seemed to have settled in her very bones.
The car pulled away from Misty Vale and headed for the White Estate.
Franco barely glanced at her before turning his attention to work, typing away on his laptop.
“Were you just in the study?”
His voice was smooth and low, right by her ear.
Petty’s heart jumped. She glanced at Franco, but his eyes stayed glued to his screen. It sounded like a casual question, but she knew he must have noticed the light was on in the study when he got out of the car.
His assistant usually handled the study. The housekeeper wasn’t even allowed inside. At this hour, the only one who could have been there was her.
After seeing the divorce papers, she’d completely forgotten what she’d gone in there for.
“Yeah, I was looking for a book. Didn’t find the one I wanted.”
But her mind was somewhere else, worrying about Adelaide’s health. She leaned against the window, lost in thought as the car moved toward the estate.
When Petty was seven, she lost both her parents. The Lane family had a long history with the Whites, and Adelaide, with her generous heart, took Petty in and raised her as her own.
At the White Estate, the one who loved her most was her grandmother.
That year, Cabinda’s first snow came out of nowhere, and Adelaide caught a nasty cold.
