The Last Time I Cried Your Name novel Chapter 40

She told herself maybe this was for the best. Soon, she wouldn’t feel pain anymore, and if she did, at least someone would care. At last, she could finally be with her mom and dad again.

But then, a loud crash split the air as the door burst open. On instinct, she opened her eyes. Through the thick smoke, she saw a pair of dark, mesmerizing eyes she couldn’t look away from.

Franco was the one who pulled her back from the edge.

She remembered her first day at the White family’s house. He hadn’t even looked at her back then.

Yet he was the one who saved her.

She heard later that after carrying her out of the burning building that afternoon, Franco had turned to everyone and made it clear. “You think you can touch someone from the White family?”

After that, no one dared to mess with her again.

It was then that Franco unknowingly planted a seed in her heart. As she grew, those feelings only deepened, growing into something she could never quite control.

Now, standing in front of him, Petty saw the boy she remembered overlapping with the man he’d become. She clenched her microphone so tightly her knuckles went white.

Franco was the one who’d rescued her from the flames, but he was also the one who’d hurt her the most.

“You don’t care about your life anymore?” His low, slightly rough voice cut through the chaos.

“Franco, please put on your mask. There’s something strange about this smoke,” Jay said, running up and handing him a respirator.

Petty’s eyes widened with realization.

The mask Franco had handed her earlier… it was his own.

Franco took the new one from Jay, put it on, then looked at Petty and caught her by the wrist. “Let’s go.”

Petty drew a shaky breath, reminding herself not to give Franco another chance to hurt her.

She pulled her hand free and spoke calmly. “I’m working right now. If you want to talk about the divorce, you’ll have to wait.”

Without looking back, she hurried over to check on her coworker. Thankfully, the firefighters arrived just in time with more respirators, and the guy with the camera was safe too.

Her respirator had a built-in mic and comms, making it easier for her to keep reporting.
