“We need to move faster.”
One of Abbot’s men called across the clearing, “Petty, we don’t have all night. Get it done, or you’ll have to pee your pants.”
Petty didn’t bother to answer. She just slipped behind a giant rock out of sight. The guys watched her go, only catching a glimpse of her clothes peeking out as she crouched down. Mist curled around the mountaintop, blending her clothing into the darkness until she was just a blackened shadow.
A bird screeched from somewhere deep in the woods.
Night was closing in. The sky was pitch black, not a single star anywhere.
Then a raindrop hit the ground.
Abbot stretched out his hand. Cold water landed in his palm, and then more drops followed, pattering quietly over the gravel trail until the light rain grew steadier, heavier.
While nobody was looking, Petty slid down the slope behind the rock, completely different from the delicate, spoiled girl she’d pretended to be before. Malcom’s recent drills hadn’t been for nothing; her body felt precise and fast.
Rain fell faster. Above her, one of Abbot’s men was calling for her to hurry. Behind the boulder, she’d left a rock propped beneath her jacket so it would look like she hadn’t moved at all.
It wouldn’t fool them for long. They were impatient, and soon enough they’d find her trick.
But luck was finally on her side. The rain, cold as it was, drowned out the sound of her movements.
She remembered: Melissa’s grave was close. Melissa and her boyfriend had both been orphans, no family left behind. The blast had reduced the area around their grave to a mess of rubble and broken stone.
There was a sheer cliff on one side, a steep path blocked by debris on another, and the forest on another.
The forest was her only escape.
The rain was light, but cold shot through her bones as the drops hit her face. Her heart was pounding so hard she barely noticed. She just kept pushing herself to move faster. Abbot couldn’t get his hands on her again. No way.
