Thinking of Petty's condition and the harsh words ringing in his ears, Franco clenched his fists. His knuckles turned a stark, trembling white. He squeezed his eyes shut before forcing the words out.
"What did the doctor say?"
"Clinical Depression."
The moment the words left Hans's mouth, Jay frowned sharply, and Galen's expression twisted into something deeply conflicted.
How could that be...
Hans hated even speaking the words, but there was no escaping reality now.
He didn't notice the violent storm of realization shattering the depths of Franco's dark eyes. Instead, he demanded, "She had it five years ago too, didn't she?"
Franco ignored the accusation, his voice tight. "The doctor officially diagnosed her with depression?"
"Yes," Hans spat.
Franco's face drained of color, his chest tightening so hard he could barely drag in a breath.
It wasn't just five years ago.
Five years ago, after discovering he was the one who drove her parents to their deaths, she had been so hollowed out by grief that she wanted to die just to escape him. To keep her alive, he had selfishly chosen to wipe that specific trauma from her mind.
He made her forget rushing back from the airport to confess to him. He made her forget the half a month they spent isolated on that island. Most importantly, he made her forget that he killed her parents. He altered her reality so she believed she had simply suffered an accident on her way to a vacation, hitting her head.
But that kind of hypnotic manipulation was never foolproof. There was always a risk the memories would violently resurface.
He had planted those toxic seeds out of his desperate greed for her love. Now, he was choking on the bitter harvest he deserved.
But her recent descent into depression started over a year ago, right after the induced labor.
Because he had immediately brought her back to Misty Vale to recover, and she had vehemently refused to see anyone, Hans rarely got the chance to visit. Shortly after, Franco had taken her away to live on the island.
