The Last Time I Cried Your Name novel Chapter 49

Petty was suddenly wide awake and shot straight up in bed. Her long hair tumbled over her shoulders, covering most of her face. She took a few deep breaths, pushed her hair back, and rubbed her face hard, trying to snap herself out of it.

Hassan was trash. Whether he lived or died had nothing to do with her. Before she’d blown the lid off what he was doing at his club, he and his pack of scummy friends had already ruined God knows how many people. The world was better off without someone like him.

But the thing was, just this afternoon, Owen had said he’d help her get rid of Hassan. Now, just a few hours later, Hassan was dead. She couldn’t help but think there was a connection.

Murder…

A cold shiver ran down her spine. She wrapped herself tighter in the blanket, grabbed her phone, found Owen’s number, and called him.

He picked up after just two rings.

“Petty?”

Owen’s voice came through, low and scratchy, with that lazy edge he always had. “You know there’s a price for waking a guy up in the middle of the night, right? Do you even know what time it is?”

“Do I need to make an appointment to ask you something?”

Petty took a steadying breath. “Did you have anything to do with Hassan’s death?”

“Oh, him.” She heard him let out a sigh, then he asked, his voice full of meaning, “Do you want it to have something to do with me?”

“Are you seriously insane?” Petty frowned. “Can you just answer me for once?”

“You get so worked up.” Owen chuckled. “What if I said it was me?”
