The Last Time I Cried Your Name novel Chapter 60

Laura, always the considerate one, spoke up from behind Adelaide. “Franco, Harris and Jackson still haven’t come in yet. It’s going to get crowded. Why don’t you stand by me?”

Franco shot a look at Adelaide, who was clearly in a bad mood, then stepped back and took his place next to Laura’s wheelchair.

Harris, ever patient, let it slide and just nodded for Jackson to come in. He was the last to step inside and hit the close button.

The elevator started its slow descent.

Franco’s eyes were fixed on the back of someone’s head, not moving an inch. When the doors opened at the hospital cafeteria, he finally looked away.

Everyone started shuffling out.

Suddenly, Laura’s wheelchair wouldn’t budge. The caregiver’s voice was full of worry. “I think the wheel’s stuck.”

She gripped the handles and tried to lift the chair, but while carrying Laura was usually fine, the heavy wheelchair made it impossible. No matter how hard she tried, it wouldn’t move at all.

The elevator doors were about to close on them.

Petty nudged Harris, urging him to help.

But before he could move, Franco stepped behind the wheelchair, grabbed the handles, and with barely any effort, lifted and pushed the wheelchair out of the elevator.

Adelaide’s face turned stormy. He always had to be the one to react first, always the one to show off how strong he was.

Once they reached the cafeteria, Adelaide sat down and yanked Franco by the sleeve. She pointed at the seat next to Petty. “Sit here,” she ordered.

“Grandma, I want to talk to Harris a bit more,” Petty said calmly.

Before Franco or Adelaide could say anything, Petty turned to Harris. “Harris, sit here. I want to ask you about Grandma’s checkup.”

“Sure,” Harris replied with a gentle smile, taking the seat beside her.

Since Petty had made it clear, Adelaide couldn’t insist. She let go of Franco’s sleeve and looked away, refusing to pay him any more attention.

Franco circled the table and pulled out a chair for himself.
