The city was quiet, the hour late. Petty had just finished soaking Adelaide’s feet and stayed to chat, keeping her company until Adelaide started drifting off, her head lolling gently against the headboard. Petty was about to slip out when she felt a hand grasp hers.
“Petty…” Adelaide’s grip was weak but insistent.
Petty paused, then sat back down at the edge of the bed. “Grandma?”
Adelaide blinked slowly, her eyelids heavy. She looked so tired, her voice raspy. “Petty, I know you’ve been put through a lot. Please, don’t stay angry with Franco. I know it wasn’t right to involve you, just because our family owes Laura, but I really hope you and Franco can get through this. Don’t let anyone else come between you.”
She squeezed Petty’s hand, struggling to keep her eyes open. “Can you do that for me?”
At the hospital earlier, Petty and Franco hadn’t spoken a single word to each other. In all the years before, nothing had ever gotten that bad between them. Petty wasn’t the type to swallow her feelings, especially after seeing Franco and Laura together. There was no way she could just let it slide.
She kept her head down, silent.
To Adelaide, it must have looked like Petty had already made up her mind.
But then Petty glanced up, saw the concern in her grandmother’s face, and smiled. “I’ll figure it out, Grandma. Don’t worry about me. You should really get some sleep. I need to head out anyway, I have work in the morning.”
Adelaide’s shoulders relaxed a little. “It’s so late. I’ll have Jackson drive you back to Misty Vale.”
Petty started to protest. “That’s not necessary, I can drive mys—”
“You’ve had a long day. I don’t like you driving alone at this hour.” Adelaide cut her off gently and called for Jackson.
Petty said nothing. She didn’t tell her grandmother she’d already moved out of Misty Vale. If Adelaide knew, she’d figure out something was up.
The test results from today’s check-up weren’t all back yet, but so far, nothing seemed too worrying. Still, Adelaide was clearly sick, and Petty didn’t want her fretting about anything else.
