Hans’s bodyguards stood face-to-face with Franco’s men, the whole area downstairs packed with people. Franco’s side had the numbers, but honestly, just having Jay there was enough to make anyone nervous.
Jay caught a glimpse of someone coming out of the building. It was a man, looking pale and walking heavily, each step sounding solid on the pavement. Instantly, Jay’s heart jumped. He hurried over. “Franco!”
As he got closer, he saw beads of cold sweat on Franco’s forehead. That had to be from the injury on his back.
Franco barely glanced at Hans’s people, then headed straight for his car. His voice was flat. “Back to the office.”
Jay remembered the important meeting that was about to start and nodded, signaling for the others to clear out.
Once Franco’s group was gone, one of Hans’s bodyguards pulled out his phone and tried calling Petty, but nobody picked up.
He immediately sensed something was off. “Come on, let’s check upstairs.”
The elevator stopped at the nineteenth floor. The bodyguards stepped out one after another, and right away, they noticed a phone lying on the floor.
“What’s this?” The lead bodyguard, Aaron, had been with Hans for years. He picked up the phone and instantly recognized it as Petty’s. He also saw his own missed call on the screen.
Aaron frowned. The phone was still lit up and unlocked. Most people didn’t set their phones to stay on, so if it was still bright, it couldn’t have been there for more than five minutes.
He got up and walked straight to the apartment door, ringing the bell. It rang again and again, but there was no answer.
A phone dropped outside the door. No one opening up.
“Petty! Petty!” Aaron’s face grew more and more tense as he knocked and shouted. He called her name a few more times, but still, nothing.
He remembered Hans’s instructions. Because of everything going on between Petty and Franco, if anything happened to Petty, he didn’t need permission to break in.
He didn’t hesitate. He punched in the passcode.
The apartment was small, so he could see everything at a glance. It was completely empty.
