The helicopter hovered above the valley, blades slicing through the cold air. Below, snow and huge boulders blanketed the ground, making it impossible for the helicopter to land.
Jay let go of the rope and hit the ground with practiced ease. He barely hesitated before sprinting over to Franco. He had a heavy coat in his hands, ready to wrap it around him, but he froze. Franco’s pale shirt was soaked in blood.
Jagged rocks were everywhere. No one could fall that far and come out unscathed. Jay had tried to brace himself for what he’d see, but Franco’s condition still made his heart race.
And even like this, Franco still wouldn’t let go of Petty.
Jay quickly draped the coat over Franco’s shoulders and reached out. “Franco, you’re hurt too badly. Let me take her.”
Franco didn’t move. He just held Petty tighter, forcing himself up. His legs were stiff, and when he tried to step forward, he swayed. Petty, though, didn’t feel the slightest jolt in his arms.
The helicopter’s searchlight cut through the darkness, flooding the area with harsh white light. Franco finally looked down and saw how pale Petty was. His eyes darkened, cold and fierce, and he walked faster toward the rope.
He kept one arm around Petty, grabbing the rope with the other.
Up above, the bodyguards stared at him, frozen. No one dared pull the rope up.
Normally, they’d trust Franco to handle anything. But now he was bleeding, barely standing. If he slipped, things would get much worse.
One of them glanced at Jay, desperate for direction.
Jay didn’t hesitate. He made a sharp gesture, clear as day: pull.
They didn’t have another option. Franco wasn’t about to let anyone else touch Petty.
The helicopter rose higher, lifting Franco and Petty up. Franco pressed her hand onto a heat pack to keep her warm. Harris, already at work, started cleaning the cut on her forehead.
Luckily, the first-aid kit had everything they needed. Harris even found some meds for her fever.
