The Last Time I Cried Your Name novel Chapter 92

“I just heard she was hurt and wanted to check on her, that’s all,” Laura said, her voice calm and steady. She didn’t even flinch at Hans’s sarcasm.

Hans had seen this side of her plenty of times before.

Laura’s composure was something else entirely.

But Hans wasn’t about to let it go. He shot back, “What else would you want? Franco got hurt saving her, so now you’re upset and want to show up just to remind everyone you exist?”

Laura’s peaceful expression softened into a small smile. “Franco helped because he’s loyal, that’s just who he is. Why would that bother me?”

Loyal. Right.

Hans remembered that night at Petty’s place. Laura had been all formal, calling Franco by his full name. But as soon as she realized Petty wanted a divorce, she started calling him just “Franco.” He’d seen people act desperate before, but never this obvious.

“Laura, you don’t have to admit anything. You saw how she acted with Franco that night. He helped her because he wanted to, not because she asked. No matter how hard you try to get her attention, she’s never going to care.”

Hans’s eyes darkened, a sharp glimmer flickering there. “Just do us all a favor and keep your distance from her. Otherwise, not even Franco will be able to help you.”

“Aaron, keep an eye on the door. Don’t let just anyone come in and bother her.”

Hans went back into the room. Petty was lying there, staring up at the ceiling. It was obvious she’d heard everything that just happened outside.

He walked over and leaned into her line of sight.

She looked at him, and for a second, there was this flash of disappointment in her eyes she couldn’t hide. But when she saw how dirty his face was, she couldn’t help it—she started laughing.

The idea of Hans, with his face all smudged and messy, confronting Laura like that was just too much. She laughed so hard tears started streaming down her cheeks. Hans reached out and gently wiped one away with his thumb. Underneath the laughter, she was still hurting.
