The rogues faltered behind me.
Too late.
He came from the dark like a myth–massive, upright, and silent.
He wasn’t a wolf. Wasn’t a man.
He was in–between.
Seven feet of raw muscle and fluid motion.
Black claws. Long silver–streaked fur across his shoulders and chest.
Digitigrade legs that coiled and released like a panther about to strike.
Eyes that glowed with a burnished gold too deep to be natural.
No words. No roar.
Just motion.
He launched into the first rogue with no hesitation.
No wasted energy.
CHAPTER 11–BREAK THE SILENCE
Then his hand reached toward me-
not to touch. Not to grab.
To offer
Open palm.
Steady.
My voice barely worked. “Who… are you?”
He didn’t answer.
Just stepped closer. Close enough I could smell rain and smoke and power. I feel like I knowhe
And when he spoke-
His voice was rough silk over stone.
“You’re safe now.”

The words hit like a rock to the gut. And just like that, everything that had been buried clawed its way to the surface.
“I’m not your mate anymore,” I bit out. “Remember?”
Silence.
He didn’t deny it. He didn’t confirm it either. Just stood there, watching me with those unreadable gold eyes like he could see past skin and into memory.
“Right,” I muttered. “Well. This was all… very dramatic.” I turned, already walking. “Thanks for the assist. But I should get back to my cabin.”
“You shouldn’t go back there.”
I stopped.
“I’ve been watching those rogues,” he continued, stepping forward, voice clipped. “Since you arrived.
They’ve been circling–watching, planning. Waiting.”
I turned slowly. “You’re telling me you knew they were there?”
“I already took out one scout two nights ago. They were testing your perimeter.”
“And you didn’t think maybe a heads–up would’ve been nice?”
“I thought they’d back off after the first warning,” he said, voice hardening. “I was wrong. Now two of them
