Chapter 142 – Eyes in the Crowd

I hate standing still.

The platform had been positioned carefully so the ceremony would be visible from nearly every corner of the square. Michelle had insisted on that point during the planning, and looking out over the plaza now, I had to admit she’d been right. From where I stood near the edge of the stage, thousands of faces stretched outward through the square and spilled into the surrounding streets where late arrivals had gathered after the chairs ran out.
Wolves and Lycans stood shoulder to shoulder beneath the strings of lights stretched between the
buildings, the dense crowd shifting slowly as people adjusted their positions to watch the ceremony
unfolding at the center of it all.
Unfortunately, that visibility worked both ways.
Everyone in the square could see the platform.
Which meant they could see me.
Normally during an event this large I would have been moving constantly, circulating through the crowd and quietly adjusting positions when the flow of people changed the environment. Security for gatherings like this was never static. People leaned to see around taller guests, vendors pushed their carts into better positions, and children darted through the gaps between adults who were only half paying attention to
their surroundings.
Standing still meant trusting the system we had built.
The officiant’s voice carried easily across the plaza as the ceremony began.
‘Today we gather not only to witness the joining of two lives…”
The words faded into the background as my attention moved methodically across the square. Habit pulled my gaze upward first, checking the elevated positions before allowing my focus to settle into the
crowd below.
Three snipers occupied the western rooftop across the plaza, positioned behind low architectural barriers that concealed their rifles while still giving them a clear view of the stage. Across the square, two wolf guards leaned against a balcony railing while monitoring the street entrance feeding into the plaza from the north side. On the eastern rooftop, another sniper shifted position as his partner stepped forward to maintain the sightline covering the southern approach.
Everything looked exactly the way it should.
Satisfied with the rooftops, I allowed my attention to drop back into the square.
The density of the crowd had increased noticeably since Thoren walked down the aisle. More people had

filtered inward from the surrounding streets, filling the open spaces between the rows of chairs Michelle had arranged the night before. Vendors had pushed their carts closer to the edges of the gathering, the smell of roasted meat drifting faintly through the air.
Crowds didn’t frighten me.
But they demanded respect.
Large gatherings could turn unpredictable if something disrupted the balance holding them together, which was why I watched everything.
Near the northern edge of the plaza, a pair of children wove recklessly between chairs while a wolf woman tried unsuccessfully to catch one of them by the back of his jacket. A group of Lycan merchants stood near a vendor cart discussing something animatedly while still keeping one eye on the stage. Several patrol units rotated positions through the outer edges of the crowd exactly as they were supposed to.
For several minutes, nothing felt wrong.
Then my attention paused on a man standing near the fountain.
He didn’t stand out because of his clothing. The dark jacket he wore blended easily with the rest of the
crowd.
What caught my attention was the way he held himself.
Most people in the square shifted constantly, adjusting their stance or leaning sideways when someone
taller blocked their view. Conversations rippled through the crowd as people reacted to the officiant’s
words.
This man didn’t move.
He stood with his arms folded loosely across his chest, watching the platform with the kind of focused
stillness that belonged more to a guard than a guest.
I watched him for several seconds.
A couple pushing through the crowd stepped between us, briefly blocking my view.
When they passed, the man had moved.
Not far.
Just enough that he now stood several yards closer to the western side of the square.
The shift was subtle enough that no one else would have noticed.
But it registered with me.
I lifted a hand toward the communication device clipped near my collar.
“North fountain,” I murmured quietly.
One of the wolf guards stationed near that section of the crowd answered a moment later.

“Confirmed.”
“Male in a blue jacket,” I said. “Mid–thirties. Watch his movement.”
There was a brief pause before the guard responded.
“Several blue jackets in this area.”
Of course there were.
By the time I returned my attention to the fountain area, the man had disappeared into the crowd.

The officiant continued speaking about the long history between wolves and Lycans while the crowd
listened with surprising attentiveness.
Movement near the southern street entrance caught my attention.
Three people pushed through the outer edge of the crowd.
They didn’t rush or shove their way forward. Instead they slipped between clusters of people until they reached one of the vendor carts near the plaza’s edge and stopped there.
From a distance they looked like travelers who had arrived late and were simply trying to find a place to
stand where they could still see the ceremony.
But something about the direction they had come from bothered me.
That entrance should have been closed hours ago.
I tapped the comm again.
“South service street.”
Another voice answered in my ear.
“Closed and secured.”
“Three individuals just entered through it.”
Silence filled the channel for a moment.
Then-
“Checking now.”
My gaze continued moving through the crowd while I waited.
Behind me, the ceremony continued without interruption. The officiant spoke calmly about unity while the
crowd watched the platform in attentive silence.
A moment later the guard returned on the line.
“The gate is still locked.”
My jaw tightened slightly.

Then how had they entered?

I let the question settle in the back of my mind as my gaze swept across the square again, this time focusing on patterns rather than individuals.
Crowds moved in waves as people adjusted their positions to maintain sightlines to the stage.
But occasionally someone stood still while everything around them moved.
