Chapter 92 – Where I Come From

I heard the knock before the guard even radioed in, and my heart jumped. I was already halfway down the stairs when Michelle called out, “They just passed the gate-”
“I know,” I called over my shoulder, my feet flying over the last steps. The closer I got, the faster I moved. By the time the front door swung open, I was practically running.
“Mom!”
She barely got her arms open in time before I slammed into her.
“Oh, honey,” she whispered, clutching me tight. “You look so good. So happy.”
I felt her breath catch and pulled back just enough to see her face. Her eyes were glassy, her smile trembling.
“Your brother would be so proud of you.”
A lump formed in my throat. “I miss Nico too, Mom.”
“I know, sweetheart.” She kissed my forehead and smoothed my hair like she used to when I was little.
My dad was right behind her, eyes shining under thick brows. He pulled me into a bear hug without a word. Just held me. Tight.
When he finally let go, I spotted the small figure peeking from behind his leg.
“Noah?”
The boy blinked up at me, wide-eyed. He was taller now-just a little-but his face still held that same pinch of caution he’d had the last time I saw him.
“Hey, bud,” I said softly.
He hesitated. Then ran to me.
I knelt just in time to catch him, wrapping my arms around him and breathing him in. He smelled like cinnamon and pine soap. Like home.
“I missed you,” I said into his hair.
He nodded against me. “I brought you something.”

“Oh?”
My mom stepped forward, holding out a rectangular gift wrapped in soft tissue paper and tied with twine. “We found it while cleaning out the old attic boxes.”
I took it gently and unwrapped the layers. My breath caught.
It was the photo.
The last one we’d ever taken as a whole family-before everything fell apart. Before Nikolai’s funeral. Before Noah ripped the original in half during a tantrum. Before I thought I’d never
see it again.
Only this one wasn’t torn. It had been reprinted, framed in carved walnut, and polished to a
soft sheen.
I didn’t even try to stop the tears.
“I don’t know how you found another copy,” I whispered.
My mother smiled gently. “Your father kept a spare in the workshop. Said someday we’d need
it.”
I hugged it to my chest like it might vanish.
After a moment, I looked up. “How is Vanessa?”
My parents exchanged a look.
“She’s quiet,” my father said. “Prison will do that to a person.”
“Still not talking?” I asked.
My mother shook her head. “Only when she asks about Noah.”
“And the rest of the pack?” I asked. “With Tobias gone…”
“Scattered,” Dad said. “Some fled. Some stayed and tried to pretend nothing happened. The elders are trying to reestablish structure, but…” He trailed off,
“They’re not like here,” my mom added quietly. “There’s no Thoren watching over them.”
I swallowed hard, glancing down at Noah, who was still holding onto my hand.
“Well,” I said, squeezing his fingers gently, “he’s safe now.”
He looked up at me, eyes steady, “I know.”

Sabrina appeared at the top of the stairs, waving as she descended. “There you are,” she called. “Let me help with the bags.”
“Oh, thank you,” my mom said warmly.
“I’ll show you to your room,” I added, taking my father’s duffel while Sabrina lifted the rest like they weighed nothing.
As we made our way through the halls, I felt the tension in my chest finally ease. Having them here-it made everything feel a little more real. Like this wasn’t just a surreal whirlwind I’d stepped into. It was my life now. And I wanted them to see it.
We reached the guest wing, and Sabrina opened the door to the suite we’d prepared. Warm, neutral tones, fresh flowers, and plenty of space for them and Noah.
“Wow,” my dad said, stepping inside. “This is nicer than any hotel I’ve stayed in.”
“It’s gorgeous,” my mom agreed. “You didn’t have to go all out, sweetheart.”
I smiled. “You’re not just guests. You’re family.”
Sabrina set the bags near the wardrobe and gave me a wink. “I’ll let you settle in.”
Before she could leave, Michelle appeared in the doorway, all sunshine and confidence.
“Hello!” she greeted, stepping in and offering her hand. “You must be Nevara’s parents, the ones who raised this powerhouse. It’s so nice to finally meet you. I’m Michelle.”
My mom stepped forward and shook her hand. “Natalie. And this is my husband, Nathan.”
“Oh, so you’re the one putting this whole thing together,” my dad said with a chuckle. ” Running the show.”
“That I am,” Michelle replied proudly, tossing a wink my way. “And I see you all have a naming tradition.”
My brows rose. “Naming tradition?”
Michelle pointed between all of us. “Nathan. Natalie. Nickolai. Nevara, Noah… That’s a lot of N’s.”
My mom burst into laughter. “Oh, it’s true! But believe it or not, it started on accident. We picked Nickolai’s name just because we loved it-didn’t even realize we were all N’s until someone pointed it out to us.”
My dad nodded. “And by the time Nevara came along, we figured we might as well roll with it.”

Michelle laughed. “And Nikolai kept it going with Noah.”

There was a beat of silence-gentle, but heavy. My mom touched the frame in my hand again.
“He really would be proud of you, sweetheart.”
I nodded, blinking fast. “Thanks, Mom.”
Michelle’s tone softened. “I’m honored to have a part in putting this together for you. Everything is right on schedule. Tomorrow will be a whirlwind, and the engagement party will be one for the history books.”
“Oh, don’t say that,” I groaned playfully. “I already feel like I’m gonna black out from the attention.”
My mom chuckled. “You’ve always hated being the center of things.”
“Yeah,” I said, smirking. “And now apparently I’m the queen of a castle.”
Michelle’s eyes sparkled. “Damn right you are.’
