Anthony knew exactly how much Charlotte had gone through in the beginning. No one understood her pain better than he did. But he never expected it would all somehow be tied to the person she trusted most in the world—her mentor.
He remembered how desperate Charlotte had been when Newell disappeared, how she’d run herself ragged just searching for any sign of him. He remembered her refusing to use Mr. Churchill for the clinical trial, all because she suspected he might be Newell’s illegitimate son. She wouldn’t let anyone take that kind of risk.
If she ever found out that her beloved mentor had been the one manipulating her, lying to her… Charlotte would be crushed.
A wave of anger shot through Anthony, hot and unstoppable. He shot up from his seat, and before he could even think, his fist smashed into Newell’s face. Hard.
Newell didn’t move, didn’t even try to dodge. Blood immediately welled up at the corner of his mouth, staining his lips a bright, angry red.
Dr. David, waiting outside the door, heard the commotion. He froze, not daring to barge in. Instead, he tiptoed closer and peeked through the tiny crack.
They’re actually fighting in there? So it’s true—this is a real love triangle.
Does Charlotte have any idea? Probably not. She’s always got Anthony on her mind. She wouldn’t notice even if someone spelled it out for her.
“Dr. David, should we go in and break them up?” the assistant whispered, looking nervous.
“Break them up?” Dr. David shot him a look, then scoffed. “You think you could actually stop either of them?”
The assistant fell silent, totally at a loss.
So they both just stayed where they were, watching and waiting. If things got really bad, they’d step in. For now, they’d just see how it played out.
Inside, Newell steadied himself on the coffee table, wiping away the blood from his mouth. He didn’t look angry at all. If Anthony’s reaction was this intense, he could only imagine how Charlotte would feel.
“To be honest, I really did let her down,” Newell said quietly. The kinder Charlotte was to him, the heavier the guilt in his heart.
“So what?” Anthony’s voice was cold, almost mocking. “You’re planning to risk your life with this antidote, thinking that’ll make Lottie forgive you?”
