“These two necklaces have a great design at first glance.”
Veronica Ham wore a white dress paired with a black trench coat. Her hair fell naturally over her shoulders, and her makeup was clean and demure.
The young woman in high heels stood next to Samantha with a bright smile. “But if you look closely, this one on the right is much more unique. It's simple, elegant, yet exquisitely detailed. It would perfectly match all the clothes you just picked out.”
“...”
Hearing the voice, Samantha turned her head. Frowning slightly at the unfamiliar woman, she asked, “And you are?”
“Hello, Samantha. My name is Veronica Ham.”
Veronica tilted her chin up, meeting Samantha's gaze with what she hoped looked like sincerity. A polite smile played on her lips. “I'm a former classmate of Roger's, and we currently work together at the medical examiner's office.”
“I happened to be passing by the mall and saw you inside, so I wanted to come say hello.”
“Roger's colleague?”
Samantha paused. Her sharp gaze swept over Veronica, taking her in from head to toe in barely ten seconds.
“What a coincidence.”
Samantha maintained her polite smile, though her tone was perfectly flat. “I don't believe we've ever met. How exactly did you recognize me?”
She was standing in the very back of the boutique.
It was nearly impossible to see her from the main walkway outside.
Not to mention, she had only picked out those clothes a few minutes ago. For Veronica to know what would match... she either followed her the whole way or had staked out the store in advance.
Her goal was obvious: to manufacture a coincidental meeting.
Since it involved Roger and this woman was desperately trying to score points, Samantha could already guess what her true intentions were.
“...”
Veronica hadn't expected such a blunt question. A flash of awkwardness crossed her face, though she maintained her smile. “I've seen you in passing before. You have such a striking presence, Samantha. It's impossible to forget.”
