"But..."
Standing frozen in place, Queenie nervously wrung the hem of her shirt. "Why are you helping me?"
On the surface, it sounded like she was just working to pay off a debt.
But Queenie saw right through it.
Asclepius was throwing her a lifeline.
"Helping you is helping myself," Charlotte replied lazily, offering no further explanation.
It was the truth.
She needed someone competent to shoulder the workload in three years.
After all, if it hadn't been for the mess in Aurelia, she never would have revealed her identity. It was too much of a hassle.
Sensing Charlotte's reluctance to elaborate, Queenie didn't push the issue, though her heart swelled with gratitude.
She hesitated for a long moment.
Stepping toward the center of the room, Queenie stood resolutely before her, her eyes reddening with unshed tears. "If you don't mind, please allow me to call you my mentor."
Hearing the title, Charlotte's eyes crinkled with amusement. "If you slack off, you'll be fired immediately."
Knowing this was an acceptance, Queenie nodded eagerly, a bright, irrepressible smile breaking across her face.
Back when she had first studied the work of Asclepius, she constantly dreamed of becoming someone just as remarkable.
She never expected that such an extraordinary person would actually become her mentor.
"Hans."
Watching the two women chat, Anthony interrupted with a distinct edge of displeasure. "Prepare the jet. Send her to the Isle of Veil right now."
Right now?
The swiftness of the command caught even Charlotte off guard.
"Right away, Anthony."
Seeing that Charlotte had no objections, Hans immediately moved to make the arrangements. "Queenie, right this way."
"Okay."
Queenie didn't resist, but just before leaving, she fidgeted awkwardly. "Mentor, could I get your contact info? Just in case I have questions about the research."
