The sharp smell of rubbing alcohol filled the air.
Stella lay in a hospital bed, her face ghostly pale, making the scrapes across her skin look even more pronounced. A few moments later, she woke from a terrifying nightmare, her eyes snapping open to blinding sunlight.
"Ms. Stella, you're awake!" The school principal, who had been anxiously waiting by her bedside, rushed forward. "Thank god you're okay, otherwise I wouldn't know how to—"
Ignoring the agonizing pain throbbing through her entire body and her splitting headache, Stella turned her bloodshot eyes to the principal. "Where is Dr. Roger?" she croaked.
At the mention of his name, the principal's expression instantly darkened. He looked entirely at a loss for words.
"What happened to him?" Stella pressed, her neck straining, her eyes instantly filling with tears.
"Please don't panic," the principal said, trying to keep his voice perfectly level. "Dr. Roger is still in the operating room. He hasn't come out yet."
The operating room?
Stella didn't hesitate. She threw off the blankets and scrambled out of bed.
"Oh, please, Ms. Stella, you can't! You're covered in injuries, you shouldn't be moving!" the principal cried out in a panic.
Stella ignored him, stumbling blindly down the hallway toward the surgical ward.
Just as she reached the doors, they swung open. A team of doctors wheeled a gurney out. The person on the bed was entirely covered by a stark white sheet.
A doctor was standing by, speaking quietly to a nurse. "Multiple shattered bones, completely unresponsive on arrival. Pronounced dead during resuscitation. Make sure the records are detailed and contact the family."
Multiple shattered bones. Unresponsive. Pronounced dead.
Stella couldn't hear whatever the doctor said next. Those few horrifying phrases echoed in her mind, obliterating her sanity.
He was dead. Roger... was dead.
