But he never thought that Clara would make the decision to have Felix stay in Brighton City too.
"Are you sure about Brighton City?" Clara's mom couldn't help but confirm. "What about your job and the house in Heron Bay…"
"My work is the same no matter where I am. As for Heron Bay… Simon will have to go back anyway. The house at Harbor Loop, we'll just leave it for him and Alex to live in."
At this, Clara looked up.
Her gaze swept across the dining table, over her parents.
In just a few years, her father's hair had turned whiter, and the wrinkles at the corners of her mother's eyes had deepened.
They had followed her from Brighton City to Heron Bay.
Now that she was coming back, they would follow her again, from Heron Bay back to Brighton City.
She deliberately made her tone lighter. "Felix is getting older; he needs a stable environment. The educational resources in Brighton City are a bit better than in Heron Bay. And most importantly, you're both here."
She didn't mention Rhys, but everyone understood.
After yesterday's scare, Clara had come to understand a simple truth:
Some bonds can't be broken.
And if they can't be broken, then you have to follow that thread, smooth it out, and secure it.
"That's great, that's great," Clara's dad nodded repeatedly. "So what about Felix's schooling? Will you be living with him at Riverside Court? How are the kindergartens in that area?"
Clara nodded. "There's a bilingual international kindergarten right across from Riverside Court. I've looked into it. The facilities and teachers are excellent. I've already called the admissions office, and they said we can arrange an interview for a mid-term enrollment after the holidays. Plus, it's close to the Police Department's command center."
The table fell silent as they listened.
She had even called the admissions office.
This meant the decision hadn't just been made.
Rhys felt an indescribable emotion swell within him.
While he was still calculating the two-thousand-kilometer round trip and researching flight times from Heron Bay to Brighton City, Clara had already quietly done all the homework.
She had single-handedly researched the credentials of all the nearby kindergartens, comparing their teacher-student ratios and educational philosophies.
And he had been completely oblivious.
He lowered his head and blinked hard.
He couldn't cry at the dinner table. His in-laws would worry, and Felix would laugh at him.
Clara looked at him and added, "You've transferred to a new post. From now on, come home early after work. Don't make Felix wait for you at the window every day, okay?"
Rhys opened his mouth, but in the end, only managed to force out one word: "Okay."
After breakfast, Rhys was especially diligent, insisting on washing the dishes.
Clara didn't stop him. She went back to the room to pack up the mountain of new toys Felix had received.
