But seeing the man who always lifted him high in the air, played with toy guns with him, sat by his little bed telling him stories of cops and robbers, and promised to return his SWAT car once he was fixed, being wheeled away so completely still into a place he wasn't allowed to enter—
He sprinted forward two steps.
Facing the transport bed that was about to disappear down the ICU corridor, he screamed at the top of his lungs:
"Daddy—!"
The bed didn't pause for his desperate cry. The nurses pushed Rhys until he vanished from sight.
Felix stood in the middle of the hallway, his little fists clenched tight, his lips pressed into a stubborn line.
Looking at her son's back, Clara realized just how much he resembled Rhys.
They were cut from the exact same cloth.
Utterly terrified, pushed to their absolute limits, yet standing their ground without yielding a single inch.
Her two boys—one big, one small—were both hopelessly stubborn.
"Clara, it's over now. You and Felix..." Simon approached, intending to offer a few words of comfort.
Before Clara could even pull her gaze away from Felix, her vision violently swayed.
A split second before she lost consciousness, she felt someone catch her firmly.
She heard voices, though she couldn't distinguish who was shouting.
"Doctor! Get someone from the OB-GYN Department, quickly! She's pregnant!"
Daniel thrust Felix into Mia's arms and helped Simon scoop up Clara's limp body, sprinting toward the elevator. "Don't touch her stomach! Keep her flat!"
Held in Mia's arms, Felix watched his mother get carried into the elevator.
The corners of his mouth trembled.
He turned around and hugged Mia's waist, asking softly, "Ms. Mia, Daddy and Mommy and my little sister... they're all going to come back, right?"
Tears silently dripped from Mia's chin into his hair.
"Yes, Felix is absolutely right."
-
Two days later.
Due to chronic exhaustion, severe anemia, and the extreme emotional whiplash from the night of the surgery, Clara experienced another threatened miscarriage.
Fortunately, there was no bleeding this time.
The head of the OB-GYN Department hooked her up to an IV of progesterone supplements and issued a strict ultimatum, mandating absolute bed rest.
