Another week passed. Clara stood by the window in The Respiratory VIP Suite, tilting the blinds down slightly to let the sunlight spill into the room.
Over the past dozen days, Rhys had safely navigated the acute rejection phase. After a thorough joint consultation by the department heads, he was finally transferred from the ICU to the VIP suite.
Dr. Black cautioned that the heavy doses of immunosuppressants left Rhys's immune system exceptionally vulnerable, making the first three months utterly critical.
Fortunately, moving out of the ICU made things somewhat more bearable.
Visitors no longer had to wear those suffocating sterile gowns or tight medical caps.
However, as a precaution, casual visiting was still banned. Anyone entering had to pass through a sterilization buffer zone and wear a medical mask for the duration of the visit.
Clara didn't care in the slightest.
To her, this was an unimaginable blessing.
As long as she could watch him heal a little more each day and see him smile at her, the rules meant absolutely nothing.
"Clara."
A soft call came from the bed.
Clara turned and walked over.
The man on the bed was finally able to sit up, resting against a stack of pillows with the oxygen cannula still in his nose. His face was shockingly thin, almost hollowed out, yet his eyes were as captivating as ever.
Only now, they were different.
In the past, Rhys's gaze had been cold and fathomless, burying everything deep beneath the surface.
Now, it was different.
It was soft, warm, and constantly searching for her.
Whether she stood by the window, sat in the chair, or walked over to wash her hands, his eyes tracked her silently, waiting patiently for her to turn around and meet his gaze.
Clara brushed his forehead. "What's wrong? Are you uncomfortable? Do you want some water?"
Rhys leaned into her touch. "No. I just wanted to call your name."
Clara couldn't help but laugh out loud.
For the past two days, Rhys had been completely addicted to saying her name, calling for her at least twenty times a day.
