"Okay."
"Third,"
Dr. Black glanced at Rhys. "Lung transplant patients have compromised immune systems for a long time. It's the price of the anti-rejection meds. So when you get home, keep your living space ventilated and clean. Avoid crowded places for at least a year, and take extra precautions during flu season. You have a child at home, and kids bring back the most germs from kindergarten. Wash hands and change clothes the moment he walks through the door. This habit is non-negotiable."
Clara had already memorized all of this by heart.
During his hospitalization, she had scoured through the post-op care manual Dr. Black provided, even creating a dedicated checklist on her phone that categorized every instruction by timeline.
But if Dr. Black wanted to repeat it, she was more than willing to listen again. Every time she heard it, she felt a little more secure.
After finishing his instructions, Dr. Black took off his glasses, wiped them, and put them back on.
Seeing this couple finally step into the light after such a harrowing storm left him feeling deeply moved.
When he first took Rhys on as a patient, the man showed zero will to live.
His attitude was basically, treat it if you can, let it be if you can't. Getting him to honestly follow medical advice was impossible.
Later on, when he returned to the hospital with a woman and a child suddenly by his side, he finally started cooperating with the treatment.
Dr. Black chalked it up to Rhys having phenomenal luck.
Of course, his own surgical skills were also top-notch.
He felt deeply satisfied as a doctor.
"Clara, you're pregnant yourself. While taking care of him, keep your own health in mind. With your family's situation, neither of you adults can afford to collapse."
Clara smiled and agreed. "Thank you, Dr. Black. I'll remember."
Another specialist chimed in, "Rhys, you better listen to your wife. If those new lungs run into maintenance issues on my watch, I won't let you hear the end of it."
Rhys tugged at his mask. "Don't worry. I wouldn't dare not listen."
The doctors chuckled.
They had all heard bits and pieces of this couple's story.
