In Leilani's entire life, the only people who had harmed her the most were the Sloans.
Hackett choked, his face turning iron-green. Clearly, she had hit a nerve.
Leilani's mother, Zadie, immediately chimed in. "Leilani, your father is doing this for your own good! Your reputation is ruined. Being able to marry into the Lambert family is already a blessing. Don't be ungrateful!"
"A blessing?" Leilani sneered. "Then why don't you give this blessing to your daughter Tamara? Does she want it?"
"You!"
Leilani had a sharp tongue. Zadie was so angry her face turned pale. She pointed at Leilani, unable to speak for a long moment.
Josiah stood to the side, brows furrowed. He evidently hadn't expected his parents to suddenly arrange such a marriage. He thought calling Leilani back was to properly ask about her relationship with Callahan. He wanted to take a softer approach.
Moreover, Leilani and Callahan were clearly on good terms right now. Rashly assigning her another marriage would only anger the Langleys and Leilani.
Josiah hesitated but spoke up. "Dad, Padgett's reputation isn't great, and..." He paused, lowering his voice. "About Callahan..."
He was reminding Hackett not to go too far; offending the Langleys wouldn't be good. After all, even if Callahan was just playing around with Leilani, he wouldn't want his woman discussing marriage with someone else while seeing him.
"Callahan?" Hackett laughed coldly, cutting him off. He thought Josiah was overthinking it.
Who was Callahan? The CEO of the Langley Group, a young talent. What kind of woman hadn't he seen? He just found Leilani fresh and interesting. He'd forget her in a while.
"Do you really think the Langley family would want a woman who's been to prison? He's just playing with her!"
"Exactly!" Zadie agreed, her tone sarcastic. "With the Langleys' status, how could they possibly look at her seriously? Stop dreaming!"
