Although she knew Dante liked Ms. Cheney, seeing it in person was a different matter entirely. Dante wasn't even this enthusiastic with his own grandchildren.
And wasn't Leilani's last name Sloan? Why was Dante calling her Ms. Cheney?
She couldn't help but ask, "Dad, her last name is Sloan. Why do you keep calling her Ms. Cheney?"
Dante finally noticed that Letty had walked in with Leilani. He wondered briefly how they had met but didn't pay much attention to Letty's question. Instead, he chuckled and began introducing Leilani. "Letty, come here, let me introduce you. This is..."
Dante froze. He realized he had always called her Ms. Cheney and didn't actually know her full name.
Both Leilani and the surrounding family members noticed his pause. Leilani looked at Dante with a hint of guilt and quickly explained. "Mr. Langley, my last name is actually Sloan. I'm Leilani Sloan."
She continued, "I didn't mean to keep it from you; I just never had the chance to explain. Paulina Cheney was my mentor, but I'm not her granddaughter. I'm actually from the Sloan family."
"The Sloan family? Hackett Sloan's daughter?" Dante looked shocked.
