"I intended to just leave them at your door and go, but I was afraid someone might take them..."
To prevent Callahan from noticing anything unusual about her real reason for being there, Leilani used Micah's bags as a cover. She couldn't very well admit she was waiting there just to hand him a gift personally, could she?
Callahan glanced at the bags in her hand, recognizing them from the photo Micah had sent him. However, he didn't show it. He looked at Leilani with a deep, unreadable expression and asked, "What are these?"
He thought that if Leilani accepted Micah's things, so be it, as long as she was honest with him about it.
Leilani didn't know what he was thinking. She simply thrust the bags toward him, her usually calm face showing a hint of exasperation.
"I went shopping at the mall today and ran into Micah. He forced these on me. I didn't want them, but he insisted on having someone chase me down to deliver them. It was so annoying."
Recalling Micah's childish and petty behavior today, Leilani still felt speechless.
She paused, then added, "I wanted to return them on the spot, but I didn't want to keep entangling with him, so I just brought them back. I was planning to have you return them to him."
Callahan stared at her for two seconds, then reached out to take the bags. With his other hand, he took out his keys to open the door and stepped aside. "I understand. We can talk about that later. Since you're here, come in."
Leilani froze. "Huh? No, that's okay. I just came to return..."
"You've been standing there for so long. Aren't you tired?"
Callahan had rushed over immediately after seeing the message, so Leilani actually hadn't waited that long.
She stood at the door, hesitating. She was never in the habit of entering other people's private territory, especially that of a man with such a strong presence like Callahan. His home seemed to carry an invisible pressure that made her instinctively want to take a step back.
"Forget it... I just came to give you the stuff. Now that you have it, I won't go in."
