The most important thing was... Even if Milford didn't want to admit it, he had legally married Tamara. Now, he was even less sure of what mindset to adopt when facing Leilani.
But since he was already here, he couldn't just hide.
Milford made up his mind, opened the car door, opened his umbrella, and walked straight toward the main gate.
Coincidentally, just as Milford reached the entrance, he saw Leilani walking out of the apartment building carrying a bag of trash.
Milford's footsteps paused. Even though he had mentally prepared himself in the car, his throat still tightened uncontrollably.
Leilani noticed him too. Her eyes instantly turned cold, instinctively defensive. "What are you doing here?"
Milford pressed his lips together and took a step forward. "Leilani, I..."
He paused, finally speaking in a low voice. "I came to check if Yvonne is safe here. And also... To apologize to you."
Leilani raised an eyebrow, her tone flat. "Oh? What are you apologizing for this time?"
She was used to people like Milford and the Sloan family flip-flopping between refusing to apologize and suddenly saying sorry.
Milford gave a bitter smile. Leilani's resistance made his chest ache. "For what happened at the wedding, and for... the misunderstandings regarding you before."
Leilani scoffed, tossed the bag into the bin, and dusted off her hands. "Milford, do you Sherwoods and Sloans just really love apologizing? You're self-righteous when you frame me, and then you act like saints when you find out the truth. What? Are your apologies free or something?"
Milford felt a tightness in his chest at her stinging words, but he couldn't refute them. He took a deep breath and said earnestly, "I know an apology doesn't fix anything, but I still wanted to tell you personally... I'm sorry."
Leilani glanced at him but didn't speak.
Milford added, "Is Yvonne... still at your place?"
Leilani nodded. "Yes."
