The Prison-Made Queen novel Chapter 451

It was as if Payton could read minds. He "looked" in Leilani’s direction, his tone calm and even. "You're wondering how I knew your posture was off, aren't you?"

Leilani nodded before realizing he couldn't see her. "Yes, Payton. How did you do that?"

Payton raised a hand, tapping his ear lightly with a fingertip. "When the eyes can't see, the other senses become sharper."

He pointed toward the ground. " Your footsteps, the rhythm of your breathing, even the friction of your clothes... they all betray your movements."

Leilani looked at him in realization. "So you can 'hear' my stance?"

"That, and more." Payton nodded.

Suddenly, he flicked his wrist. A coin shot from his fingers with a sharp “ding,” embedding itself in the ground right in front of Leilani’s toes.

"If you had taken a step forward just now, that coin would have shattered your kneecap."

Leilani’s pupils constricted. He was blind, yet he could predict her movements with terrifying precision. Was this the caliber of one of the top three hitmen in the Underground?

Abel scrambled up from the ground, rubbing the dirt off his clothes, and teased Payton with familiar ease. "Payton, that trick is still as beautiful as ever. You haven't lost your touch!"

Ignoring the flattery, Payton turned his attention back to Leilani. "Your intuition is good, and you learn fast."

He paused, his voice softening comfortably. "Sooner or later, you'll surpass me."

"After all..." He gave a self-deprecating smile. "You're whole, unlike me."

Leilani looked at his vacant eyes and his paralyzed legs, feeling a pang of bitterness in her chest. For someone who once stood at the pinnacle of power to now be confined to a wheelchair... it was a cruel twist of fate.
