Callahan cast his eyes down at the photo, his expression calm as he nodded. "Yeah."
His tone was casual, devoid of any discernible emotion, but Leilani keenly sensed the atmosphere around him grow slightly heavier.
"He passed away early. I was still pretty young when he died, so I don't have many memories of him. All I really remember is that he was always busy. He rarely came home."
Leilani's chest tightened. She instinctively looked back at the stern, unsmiling man in the photo.
So that was it.
Leilani had always wondered how such an elegant, open-minded woman like Letty had ended up raising such a reserved, emotionally detached son like Callahan. The root of it lay entirely with his father.
She gently traced her fingers over the picture, a hint of heartache for Callahan creeping into her voice. "You and your dad... you look so much alike. If he could see you from heaven now, all grown up and successful, I know he'd be incredibly proud."
Callahan's lips twitched slightly, a complex emotion flashing through his eyes as he looked at her. "I hope so."
Still looking down at the album, Leilani missed the shift in his expression and kept turning the pages.
After the family photos came pictures of Callahan growing up. They were almost all identical in one specific way: the little boy in every single photo always wore the same rigid, deadpan expression. His dark eyes stared seriously into the lens like a miniature adult. Seeing such an age-inappropriate expression on a young child's face was incredibly amusing.
Leilani couldn't hold back a laugh. "Why were you so serious all the time?"
Callahan raised an eyebrow. "It's called being mature for my age."
Stifling her laughter, Leilani kept flipping through. The Callahan in the photos grew older, but his expression barely changed.
Leilani shook her head, her eyes sparkling with mirth. "I didn't say that. I just think... you were actually kind of cute like this."
Liar. The look on her face clearly said otherwise.
Callahan let out a soft huff, choosing not to call her out. Instead, he reached out and pinched her cheek. "You're getting pretty bold lately, aren't you? Teasing me now?"
Leilani laughed and tried to dodge, but he pulled her right into his lap. He looked down at her, his voice low. "Still laughing? Are you going to deny that you were just secretly roasting me in your head? Do I look that easy to fool?"
Leilani blinked, feigning utter innocence. "I don't think I said anything wrong! You were just a haughty little rich boy. What's the matter? Is the haughty young master throwing a tantrum because he doesn't want to be teased?"
Seeing her rare flash of cocky, playful defiance, Callahan couldn't decide whether to be annoyed or utterly charmed.
