The Prison-Made Queen novel Chapter 596

Unexpectedly, Zeus didn't hurl any vicious remarks at Leilani this time. He stood silently at the door, treating her as if she were invisible. He looked like an empty shell, completely drained of life.

Zeus had no desire to acknowledge Leilani, and the feeling was mutual. When they crossed paths, they treated each other like strangers. However, his current state was undeniably bizarre.

Leilani quietly observed him from the corner of her eye. Standing in front of the filing cabinet, his profile looked exceptionally pale under the cold white lights. Dark circles bruised the skin under his deeply sunken eyes, making it obvious he hadn't had a good night's sleep in a long time. He exuded a morbid sense of paranoia, like a bowstring pulled to its absolute limit, ready to snap at any second. It had only been a month since they last saw each other, yet Zeus had lost a significant amount of weight—so much so that he looked gaunt and skeletal.

What surprised Leilani the most, however, was the look in his eyes. Gloomy and restless, he resembled a trapped beast on the verge of violently lashing out.

The last time she saw him at the hospital, Zeus had been cruel and arrogant, but at least he had seemed full of energy and smug confidence. Now, that had been replaced by something far sharper: a terrifying blend of fear and madness.

Sensing her gaze, Zeus suddenly snapped his head up, his eyes dark and brooding. "What are you looking at?"

He wasn't in the mood to give Leilani a hard time, yet here she was, sizing him up?

Leilani withdrew her gaze and went back to flipping through the files. "I recall this place requires authorized access," she said in a flat tone. "When did you get clearance to be in here?"

Zeus let out a cold laugh. His voice was hoarse and dripping with disdain. "Did you really think pulling strings was the only way into the archives?"

He waved a keycard in his hand, his eyes filled with mockery. "The hospital director gave this to me. I got it fair and square."

Leilani narrowed her eyes. "What do you mean?"

Naturally, she didn't take his words to heart. What kind of brother was he? Given everything Zeus had done to her, if all older brothers in the world acted like him, siblings would be tearing each other apart left and right.

Instead of answering, Zeus just gave her a chilling glare before storming out. The heavy door of the archives slammed shut behind him with a loud bang.

Leilani stood rooted to the spot, frowning slightly. She didn't quite get it. Was Zeus trying to drive a wedge between her and Floyd? What made him think she would trust his word over Floyd's? Shaking her head, she looked down at the file in her hands, feeling somewhat exasperated. Zeus was definitely falling back into his old habits—he just couldn't stand to see other people doing well.

On the drive home, Leilani cruised down the street, her gaze absently sweeping across the view outside her window.
