The Prison-Made Queen novel Chapter 599

Callahan's fingertips lightly tapped against the glass window, a rare hint of irritation lacing his tone. "We didn't argue. But when I got home today, Leilani's behavior was very off."

He paused, his voice dropping slightly. "You know how the people in our social circle are. I'm worried someone might have been running their mouth in front of her."

Lennox immediately grasped the severity of the situation. Callahan had always been the golden bachelor of high society—the dream guy for countless young women. Consequently, plenty of people were displeased by his relationship with Leilani. They were always circling, waiting for an opportunity. It was entirely possible that someone had cornered Ms. Sloan somewhere out of sight without Callahan ever finding out.

"I understand," Lennox replied swiftly. "I'll investigate it as soon as possible. I'll retrace Ms. Sloan's steps today and see if anyone approached her."

"Alright," Callahan murmured, then added, "Pay special attention to the hospital. She was there today. Find out exactly who she met."

Lennox nodded on his end. "Understood, Mr. Langley."

After hanging up, Lennox stared at his phone screen with a slight frown. Although his interactions with Leilani were sparse, he was fairly familiar with her personality. For something to trigger such wild emotional fluctuations in her, it definitely wasn't a trivial matter. Wasting no time, he immediately made calls to dispatch his people to investigate.

Back in the apartment, Callahan pocketed his phone and stepped closer to the window, watching Leilani's silhouette vanish into the night.

When Leilani opened her front door, the living room lights were still on.

Yvonne was curled up on the couch, watching TV. Hearing the noise, she immediately turned her head. "Leilani? You're back? Why didn't you stay over at Mr. Langley's place today..."

Her sentence abruptly halted, and her brow furrowed. "Leilani, what's wrong?"

Leilani stood motionless in the entryway. She was deathly pale, the light completely gone from her eyes, looking as though all the life had been sucked out of her. Yvonne had never seen her in such a state before, and it scared her half to death.

Yvonne immediately dropped the remote control and ran over barefoot. "What happened? Why do you look so awful?"

A few seconds of silence hung in the air before Leilani's muffled voice came through the door. "No, thanks."

Yvonne sighed and leaned against the doorframe. "Well... just remember to call me if you need anything."

At 2:17 a.m.

Leilani was still lying in bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep. With her eyes wide open, she stared blankly at the ceiling. The occasional chirping of insects drifted in from outside, while moonlight spilled through the gap in the curtains, casting a cold white streak across the floor.

She rolled over and buried her face into her pillow, but those harrowing images refused to stop flashing through her mind.
