Looking at them, a handsome man and a beautiful woman, they did seem strangely well-matched. It was no wonder Brenda had misunderstood.
“Have I been away for too long? How come I don’t recognize anyone?” Molly wondered aloud. “Who is that handsome guy? He can’t be from around here, can he? A guy that good-looking would definitely have a reputation in our circle.”
Molly couldn’t shake the feeling that she was missing out on some major gossip.
Brenda shook her head dismissively. “Who knows? All I know is that he’s another man Leilani is hooking up with behind Callahan’s back!”
An idea sparked in her mind, and Brenda’s eyes darted around slyly. She quickly took out her phone and, with a few taps, sent the photo she had just taken to Callahan, adding a message.
[Callahan, what a coincidence! I was out to dinner with a friend and happened to see Ms. Sloan having coffee with a gentleman. I wonder what their relationship is? He’s quite handsome. Do you know him, Callahan?]
Molly watched her type out the words and felt an immediate sense of unease. Her upbringing told her that what Brenda was doing—secretly taking photos of people—was wrong. But she also knew how long Brenda had been in love with Callahan. As her friend, should she really interfere?
Molly hesitated, debating whether to try and talk Brenda out of it. She asked quietly, “Brenda, who are you sending that photo to…?”
