As they were about to leave, Ethan looked at Leilani. “Should we call it a day? I can give you a ride home.”

Leilani shook her head. “No, it’s okay. I drove here.”

“Alright, then.”

"Thank you for the gift. I really love it.”

Ethan smiled. “I’m glad you like it.”

He hesitated for a moment before asking, “Can I… ask you out again sometime?”

“Of course,” Leilani replied without a second thought. As a friend, Ethan was thoughtful and kind, not to mention her childhood was filled with the kindness of his family. In her heart, she had long seen him as an older brother.

Ethan could see that Leilani had no romantic feelings for him, and the ache in his heart deepened. After a long moment, he managed a resigned smile. “That’s good.”

He watched her leave, his eyes following her until she disappeared around the corner. Then he lowered his gaze to the coffee stains on the table and let out a soft sigh.

It’s okay, he told himself. So what if she’s engaged? An engagement doesn’t always lead to marriage. And even married people get divorced. If he just waited, sooner or later, his chance would come.
