The Prison-Made Queen novel Chapter 768

"I trusted you with everything, and you stabbed me in the back! Did you orchestrate the hostile takeover of my company?!"

There was a brief pause on the line, followed by feigned astonishment.

"Hackett, where are you hearing these ridiculous rumors? Why would I do such a thing? We've been friends for decades... Besides, if my family hadn't been propping you up through all your recent disasters, you would have gone bankrupt months ago."

That was the absolute last thing Hackett wanted to hear.

"Cut the crap! Josiah found the paper trail! Stop treating me like a moron!"

He was shaking so violently the phone rattled against his ear. "Tell me Apex Wealth Capital isn't yours! I was wondering how Cedric Watson and the executives who have been with me for over a decade could just betray me out of nowhere. You bought them all off!"

Fitch hadn't expected Josiah to dig quite that deep, but being exposed didn't seem to bother him in the slightest.

The line went quiet for a moment. When Fitch spoke again, the polite, friendly facade vanished, replaced by a slow, dripping condescension.

"Alright, since you've figured it out, there's no point pretending. Yes, Apex is my firm. As for the investments... Hackett, I warned you a long time ago. The market is the market. If someone is selling, someone else is buying. Your stock was in the gutter. I saw value in it, so I bought in. Is that a crime?"

He let out a brazen chuckle. "Actually, I should be thanking you for signing that proxy document. If you hadn't handed over that initial startup capital, this acquisition wouldn't have gone nearly as smoothly."
