It rang endlessly before disconnecting.
Once was normal. But after calling five times in a row with no answer, Hackett’s face darkened terribly. He glared at the screen, his lips pressed into a tight, pale line, but he said nothing. He immediately dialed Milford.
This time, the call was brutally rejected after just two rings.
Something snapped inside Hackett’s brain. Shaking with rage, he hurled the phone across the room. It smashed against the hardwood floor, the shattered screen reflecting his distorted, furious face.
"Bastards! They're all bastards!"
He could almost expect it from Milford. Ever since the wedding, his son-in-law had barely shown him an ounce of respect. Furthermore, Milford was Fitch’s son. There was no way he was entirely ignorant of his father’s hostile takeover. Hackett wouldn't be surprised if the kid had helped orchestrate it.
But what truly broke Hackett's heart and fueled his fury was Tamara ignoring his calls.
Of everyone in the family, Hackett felt he had sacrificed the most for his adopted daughter. From the day she arrived, he had treated her like absolute royalty. Even after Leilani had been found and brought back, he never once neglected Tamara. He gave her the best of everything. Even when she acted recklessly and nearly killed Yvonne Sherwood, he had shielded her, forcing his own biological daughter to take the fall.
And for what? Now that the family was completely destroyed and on the verge of being thrown onto the streets, the daughter he loved more than life itself wouldn't even pick up the phone.
