The Prison-Made Queen novel Chapter 812

"Do I look like someone who can't distinguish right from wrong?" Leilani rolled her eyes at him. "I'm just explaining it because you have a nasty habit of getting jealous over absolutely nothing. I figured I'd save you the trouble of overthinking and sulking about it later."

Callahan let out a low chuckle. He took his right hand off the steering wheel and gently squeezed her fingertips. "Have a little faith in me. Am I really that unreasonable?"

Leilani's pointed silence was answer enough.

Callahan laughed again, though a flicker of guilt crossed his mind as he recalled a few of his past jealous episodes. He cleared his throat, his expression sobering into something far more genuine.

"Look, you were my first real relationship. I didn't exactly have experience to draw from. But I'm not that immature anymore. Besides, you saving a life is serious business. I know how to separate the two."

Leilani cast him a sidelong glance, and seeing the absolute sincerity in his eyes, decided to let him off the hook. She turned her hand over to lace her fingers through his, shifting her gaze to the blurry city lights rushing past the window.

Thinking back to how incredibly cautious and deferential Yvonne had been with her tonight, Leilani let out a quiet sigh, a sense of closure washing over her.

"I don't know why, but seeing Milford lying on that operating table today instantly reminded me of Yvonne four years ago. To be honest... I don't hate the Sherwoods anymore. Not even Milford."

She rested her head against the window. "When I think about everything that happened in the past, it feels like it belongs to another lifetime. But when I really look at my life now... I have you. I have my own future to build. And things are good."

She looked back at him. "Wasting my time and emotional energy staying angry over their mess just isn't worth it."

Callahan gave her hand a reassuring squeeze, his thumb tracing soft circles over her knuckles. "You're completely right."
