Having completely moved past her resentment toward the Sherwoods, Leilani no longer carried the icy hostility she once had. She treated Milford exactly how she would treat any close friend's older brother.

Milford swallowed hard, entirely unaccustomed to her acting so casual with him. It made the guilt twisting in his gut burn even hotter.

His Adam's apple bobbed as he struggled to find his voice. Avoiding her gaze, he managed to croak out, "I'm fine. I feel a lot better."

The room fell into an awkward silence. Aside from checking his vitals, Leilani really had nothing else to say to him.

After a few agonizing seconds, Milford seemed to make a decision. He lifted his head, forcing himself to meet her eyes directly. "Leilani... thank you."

"Yvonne told me everything. If it wasn't for you yesterday, I'd be dead."

He paused, the weight of the moment pressing down on the room.

"I owe you my life. But more than that... I trusted the wrong people before. I was completely blind. I am so deeply sorry for the things I said to you."

"No need," Leilani replied coolly, her expression entirely unreadable. "I helped because of Yvonne. Besides, I'm a doctor. I would have stepped in no matter who was on that table."

She deliberately ignored his apology for the past. Milford knew instantly that she hadn't forgiven him.

A bitter disappointment settled in his chest, but he knew he deserved it. After everything their family had put her through, a simple 'I'm sorry' was never going to magically erase the damage.

Looking at her composed, indifferent face, the guilt became unbearable. Remembering what his father was currently planning, Milford decided he was done keeping secrets.

The Sherwoods had wronged her enough. If giving her this information helped her protect herself, it was the absolute least he could do.
