The Prison-Made Queen novel Chapter 815

Ethan's phrasing was flawless. He didn't dismiss Callahan's influence, but he made it explicitly clear that justice had been served strictly by the book.

Leilani understood exactly what he was doing, but she smiled anyway. "Regardless, we really owe you for this one. When I get back from my business trip, dinner is on me. I want to properly thank you."

Ethan laughed. "It's a date. I'll be waiting."

"I'm going to make you pay for the most expensive steak in the city!"

But as the conversation shifted to her impending trip to Northern Myanor, Ethan's tone turned serious again. He couldn't help but slip into protective cop mode.

"Look, I know how capable you are, and I'm sure you've prepped for every possible scenario. But I still need to say it: Myanor is a completely different beast right now. It's incredibly volatile. You and Mr. Langley have to watch your backs."

Leilani couldn't help but laugh at his mother-hen routine, which completely contradicted his hardened-detective persona. "I know, I know."

"I'll be careful. And really, Ethan... thank you again for today. We'll catch up when I get back."

...

Milford remained unconscious in the hospital for two full days.

On the morning of the third day, a sliver of dawn sunlight slipped through the blinds, casting long, pale shadows across the linoleum floor of his private room.

On the bed, Milford's eyelids twitched. Beneath the thin skin, his eyes rolled sluggishly before he finally managed to pry them open to a narrow slit.

He was greeted by the glaring white of a hospital ceiling. He blinked, his drug-addled brain struggling to process his surroundings until the sharp, sterile scent of antiseptic hit him. Strangely, the harsh chemical smell brought him a sudden wave of comfort.
