Max stared straight ahead, his voice calm. “I never expected you to be grateful.” He reached out to take her hand.

Felicia instinctively tried to pull away, but Max tightened his grip. His dark eyes bore into hers. “I told you, Jeremy did you a favor. I can make it up to him for you.”

Felicia’s brows knitted together, and she let out a cold laugh. “Are you trying to make it up to him or just humiliate him?”

Max withdrew his hand. “If Jeremy is as magnanimous as he seems, where’s the humiliation? If he feels humiliated, it only means the compensation isn’t enough.”

Felicia’s fingers clenched into fists, her breathing growing heavy. “Max, who exactly are you trying to shame?”

Max’s tone grew several degrees colder. “Felicia, I have no reason to give up the TC partnership and the Heathview investment just to shame someone. You are the first person who has ever cost me so much.”

Felicia stared at the serious man before her, unable to tell if he was speaking the truth or just spinning another lie.

But one thing she knew for sure was that Max never made a move that didn’t benefit him in some way.

“So, I should feel honored, is that it?”

“How you feel is your own perception,” Max said flatly. “I can’t force you to feel anything.”

Felicia stared at him, her fingers tightening.

Silence descended upon them.

As their eyes met, it felt as though he could see straight through to every emotion in her heart, while his own eyes were like a bottomless dark abyss, impossible to read.

The only sound in the car was the soft cadence of their breathing.

Felicia said nothing more, turning to look out the window.
