Felicia reached out and took the book from his hand. Back when she was a student, she had flipped through this book countless times. She opened it to the first page.
Max turned around, went back to his desk, and started working. Silence filled the quiet study. Not a sound was heard.
After finishing a task, Max looked up at the woman sitting on the sofa. She was earnestly reading the book in her hands. She was so entirely focused that she didn't notice his gaze at all. Max withdrew his eyes.
An hour and a half later, Max had finished the majority of his tasks. He raised a hand to pinch the bridge of his nose. Felicia was still turning the pages, completely engrossed in the story.
Max walked over to her, but she remained entirely oblivious. It wasn't until the book was taken from her hands that Felicia belatedly looked up at the man standing in front of her.
She heard his teasing tone. "Quite the studious one, aren't you?"
"Give the book back to me," Felicia said.
Max glanced at the page number and slipped a bookmark inside. "Read it tomorrow. Get some rest early."
"I cannot sleep."
"Then read it in bed."
Felicia stood up, snatched the book from his hand, and turned to walk out the door.
Since he still had work left to do, Max didn't follow her out. He simply watched her leave.
By the time he finished his work, it was already past midnight. When he returned to the bedroom, he found Felicia leaning against the headboard, still reading. He walked over and plucked the book from her grasp. "Alright, it is very late. Lie down and go to sleep."
"I cannot sleep until I finish reading it," Felicia said.
Max glanced at the book in his hand. She had already reached the forty-eighth chapter. "We have to take Anne to school tomorrow morning. Don't end up unable to get out of bed."
