A quiet sigh escaped Ava's lips. She turned around, gently took Anne's small hand, and lowered her voice to a whisper. "Let Mommy sleep. We are going downstairs and getting some breakfast."
"Okay," Anne agreed.
Later that morning, Darin arrived at the Ross family home looking exceptionally haggard.
"Dad, Ava," Darin greeted them tiredly. "Where is Felicia?"
"She is still resting," Ava replied smoothly. "You must be incredibly busy these days. You should focus on sorting out your own affairs first. Felicia needs time to process everything. Even if she saw you right now, she probably wouldn't have much to say to you. I suggest you give her some space."
Darin knew she was right, but he simply couldn't stop himself from coming to check on her.
Colton chimed in gently. "She is right, Darin. Take things slowly. Do not put too much pressure on yourself."
Darin offered a stiff nod. He was just about to turn and leave when Ava suddenly spoke up again, her tone remarkably casual. "Have you had breakfast yet?"
Darin froze in his tracks. He stared at Ava, completely caught off guard. He instinctively opened his mouth to politely decline and say he had already eaten, but Colton quickly nudged him. "Darin, aren't you going to thank her?"
Snapping out of his daze, Darin swallowed his initial refusal. "Thank you, Ava."
Ava gave him a brief nod before heading into the kitchen. A few minutes later, she emerged with a plate of french toasts.
"Eat up," she instructed gently.
Darin sat at the dining table, staring quietly at the comforting meal before him. Ava quietly slipped out of the dining room to give them space.
Colton pulled out a chair and sat across from his son. "Eat up before they get soggy."
Darin took a bite. The toasts were perfectly cooked, and the rich aroma of butter was intensely comforting. It was just simple french toasts, yet an indescribable wave of emotion suddenly crashed over him. His nose stung with unshed tears. Desperate to keep his composure, he forced down his feelings and began eating a little faster.
"Slow down," Colton advised warmly. "You're going to choke."
