Danielle flinched as if struck.
The color drained from her face, and her hands, hanging by her sides, clenched into tight fists. She had never considered that. It was true—if something happened to both her and Alexander, what would become of Niki? How would a little girl, only a few years old, face the world alone after losing both her parents?
The noise of the departure lounge seemed to fade away, and the people around her blurred into indistinct shadows. Danielle stared at the anguish and worry in Alexander’s eyes, her mind a battlefield. On one side was her resolve to stay by his side and face the challenges with him; on the other was the heavy weight of her love for her daughter. The two emotions clashed violently within her.
Nash stood nearby, not daring to breathe. He could feel the tense atmosphere between them, understanding both Alexander’s concern and Danielle’s persistence. For a moment, he had no idea how to mediate.
After a long while, Danielle took a deep breath and looked up at Alexander. The hesitation in her eyes slowly receded, replaced by an even stronger resolve.
“I can’t go back.” Her voice was soft but carried an unshakeable force. “Niki is my daughter. I love her more than anyone, and I would never want her to be hurt.”
“You and I both know that extreme environment testing is a necessary part of every research project. There are safety protocols and data to back them up. Nothing major will happen.”
“And you don’t need to use our daughter to emotionally blackmail me. After all, out of the two of us, you’re the one we should be worried about. If I’m not there and something happens, no one will be able to talk sense into you.”
Danielle stared at him. “Whether you agree or not, I’m going. This is not up for debate.”
Alexander stood frozen, silent for a long time. Finally, his Adam’s apple bobbed, and he relented. He couldn’t win against her. He couldn’t control her. She was with Ninesky, and he had no authority to stop her. It seemed there was truly no way to refuse her now. She was right.
Alexander took a deep breath. “Fine. I agree. You can come with us.”
